Now, we came back. First we went to Dallas. My father did his dental degree all over again. And then we ended up moving to Iowa, of all places. We grew up in Iowa. And in Iowa, we went through the whole course. I went to high school, I went to college. And then one day, something that I'll never forget, my father picked me up after my sophomore year in college, and he was driving me home, and he said, "Jim, what are your aspirations? What do you want to study? What do you want to do?" And I said, "Dad," -- My mother actually was a philosopher, and had filled us with ideas about protest and social justice, and I said, "Dad, I'm going to study political science and philosophy, and I'm going to become part of a political movement." My father, the Korean dentist, slowly pulled the car over to the side of the road --

> 이제, 우리 가족은 다시 댈러스로 돌아 왔습니다. 내 아버지는 다시 치의학을 공부했고, 우리는 기라고 아이오와로 이사를 갔습니다. 우리는 아이오와에서 자랐고 아이오와에서 고등학교, 대학교를 다녔습니다. 제가 잊을 수 없는 일이 그때 있었습니다. 아버지께서 대학교 2학년인 저를 태우고 그는 집으로 운전을 하던 도중 제게 질문 했습니다. "짐 너의 열망은 무엇이냐? 뭘 공부하고 싶고 뭘 하고 싶냐?" 그리고 저는 말했습니다. 사실 저희 어머니는 철학자였고 사회정의와 저항에 대한 생각을 제게 주셨었습니다. "아버지, 저는 정치학과 철학을 공부할 것 입니다. 그리고 저는 정치 운동의 한 축이 되겠습니다. 한국인 치과의사였던 아버지는 천천히 차를 갓 길에 대었습니다.

He looked back at me, and he said, "Jim, you finish your medical residency, you can study anything you want." Now, I've told this story to a mostly Asian audience before. Nobody laughs. They just shake their head. Of course.

 > 그는 저를 보고는 말했습니다. "짐 니가 의학과정을 끝내면, 니가 하고싶은 것을 마음껏 공부해라" 저는 이 이야기를 대게 아시아 청중분들에게 전에 말했었습니다. 아무도 웃지 않았어요. 그들은 그저 고개를 끄덕였습니다. 

(여기가 뭔가 미국식 웃음 포인트 같은데, 몇번을 봐도 저도 아직 왜 웃는지 정확하게 이해는 안되네요 ㅠㅠ)

 

So, tragically, my father died at a young age, 30 years ago at the age of 57, what happens to be how old I am right now, and when he died in the middle of my medical and graduate studies -- You see, I actually got around it by doing medicine and anthropology. I studied both of them in graduate school.

 >  그리고 나서 비극적이게도, 제 아버지는 돌아가셨스니다. 30년전 57세의 나이에요. 지금 제 나이이네요. 아버지가 돌아가셨을때 저는 의학과정을 졸업했고, 알시겠지만 사실 저는 의학과 인류학을 공부했습니다. 대학원에서 두가지 모두 공부했죠. 

 

 tragically : 비극적이게도

 

But then right about that time, I met these two people, Ophelia Dahl and Paul Farmer. And Paul and I were in the same program. We were studying medicine and at the same time getting our PhD's in anthropology. And we began to ask some pretty fundamental questions.

For people who have the great privilege of studying medicine and anthropology -- I had come from parents who were refugees. Paul grew up literally in a bus in a swamp in Florida. He liked to call himself "white trash." And so we had this opportunity and we said, what is it that we need to do? Given our ridiculously elaborate educations, what is the nature of our responsibility to the world? And we decided that we needed to start an organization. It's called Partners in Health. And by the way, there's a movie made about that.

 > 의학과 인류학을 공부하는 사람들의 가진 특권이 있습니다. 제 부모님은 피난민이었고, 폴은 플로리다에서 거의 늪 안의 버스에서 자랐습니다. 그는 그 자신을 '백인 쓰레기'라고 부를 정도 였죠. 그리고 우리는 이 말도 안 되는 기회를 가졌습니다. 우리는 "우리가 해야하는 것은 무엇인가? 우리의 말도 안되게 정교한 교육들이 주어진 상황에서 우리가 세계에 가져야할 책임의 본질은 무엇인가?를 되물었습니다. 그리고 우리는 우리는 조직을 만들어야한다고 결정했습니다. 그것은 건강의 파트너라는 이름으로 불리게 됩니다. 그후 이 조직과 관련된 영화또한 나오게 됩니다.

There's a movie that was just a brilliant movie they made about it called "Bending the Arc." It launched at Sundance this past January. Jeff Skoll is here. Jeff is one of the ones who made it happen. And we began to think about what it would take for us to actually have our aspirations reach the level of some of the poorest communities in the world.

 오늘은 여기까지 해석 해 보겠습니다. 대강 내용을 정리하자면 김용총재님이 어떻게 미국에서 자랐고 왜 사회구호 조직을 만들게 됬으며 누구와 함께 어떠한 열망을 이루기 위해 이 일을 시작했는지를 말하는 내용이네요. 이 부분에서 나오는 몇몇 아프리카의 치료받은 환자분들을 보면 아주 감동적입니다.
